Noel,

Depends on the rack.  If there isn't a wall behind and if the rack has rear
doors then you could put a deeper item in the rack.  If you are wanting to
mount a server on sliding rails you wouldn't be able to fit cable
management hardware though.
I've got some 42U and 24U racks available.

Depth of cabinets is mentioned on here a lot, excuse the dense
question but what is there to stop you putting a deeper item in a
shallower cabinet?! is there anyting at the back that prevents
something just sticking out the back?! i.e. if it was on a shelf in
the rack?!

Sorry haven't got a rack and debating the purchase of one (after a
suitable hunt for a minimal cost one!!)
