I'd say that Ubuntu can be thought of as "Debain testing ...with
updates!"[1]. I've been a fan of Debian for many years, having
previously used RedHat (fedora) and SUSE. I tend to use Debian Stable
on servers or machines with a specific purpose, unless there's a good
reason not to, but I find Ubuntu better for general desktop use (where
being stuck with an older version of Firefox, for example, is undesirable).

[1] Due to the way the Debian release system works, packages in Testing
can take forever to get security/bugfix updates, as the newer packages
never get past Unstable. Running Unstable is generally considered
harmful, as things can and do break as bleeding-edge packages are
introduced.
