Nop, didn't work.  Any ideas if a DVI-HDMI cable would allow a higher
res?

First port of call - try using an application called powerstrip to generate
a custom resolution.

It may well be that the highest rate that the Sony can support via VGA is
1380 x 768 but it's worth a shot with powerstrip first.
