Hi Peter,

Welcome to the list...

Like you say there are many ways to approach HA and a number of
different products, not all of them being compatible with each other.

There are a number of solutions which act as 'middle ware' which enable
you to integrate several sub systems and give that overall intelligence
that seems to be the Holy Grail of HA.

I would suggest you look into the XPL and Xap protocols which are
gaining a lot of popularity, especially with serious DIY type Home
Automaters. I also use Homeseer, www.homeseer.com
<http://www.homeseer.com/>  , which
is expensive to get started but has
a great support base in its forums which you can get to from the home
page.

There are also various ways to achieve whole house audio/video ,
www.xlobby.com <http://www.xlobby.com/>  , as an
example  which is also
Windows PC based.

It is worth doing the reading and then trying to capture your
requirements in a document or diagrams. Obviously an Ethernet network
will for the basis for most of the equipment but also other inputs and
outputs for movement detection, temperature, security... If these can
all be part of the fundamental design it will make things easier later.

Hi Everyone,

I have checked out a lot of technologies concerning home automation,
but there are too many out there to understand the advantages and the
disadvantages of them. I have a small flat (2 rooms, 1 bathroom, 1
kitchen + diner) and I want to setup a full featured HA system in this
small flat. I considered first EIB or X10. EIB is too expensive, and
X10 is an old technology. I live in Hungary, and HA systems are not
really popular here so far. EIB products cost a lot of money.

Features i would like to have:
- audio systems in all rooms
- light scenes with dimming options
- heating and ventillation and air conditioning, also how can i
control a regular stocker with HA
- I also want to have integrated security with motion sensors

For me this HA system seems to be very complicated, but I hope it can
be done with a small budget. I would like to have some central unit
like a PC operating beneath the HA, but also would be good, if the PC
gets broken, the HA is able to work without PC interaction. I have
seen so many solutions out there for these problems, I just simply
cannot decide. I'm an IT technician so hopefully I can do all the work
by myself.

I would appreciate any suggestion, ideas or solutions for these
problems. Anything that you guys have tried and proved to be stable
and working over time.
