Thanks for the suggesstions, but neither worked, I'm afraid.

Notepad showed blank lines and rtf showd a single line of squares! Looking
at the files in UltraEdit as Hex, showed nothing but zeros - all after
'conversion' by Word.

It does look as though there's nothing there. :o(

The files haven't been viewed sinced 1994 and 1998 respectively.

Rodney,

Two things to try:

It may be a font corruption problem.  Try to cut-and-paste the entire
document into notepad.

If that gets you nowhere then change the file extension to rtf and open the
file with WordPad.  Most lot of the formatting will be lost but it should
be
possible to cut-and-paste the text into a new document.  You can probably
cut-end-paste any embedded objects too if these are not corrupted.
