Rodney,

Two things to try:

It may be a font corruption problem.  Try to cut-and-paste the entire
document into notepad.

If that gets you nowhere then change the file extension to rtf and
open the file with WordPad.  Most lot of the formatting will be lost
but it should be possible to cut-and-paste the text into a new
document.  You can probably cut-end-paste any embedded objects too if
these are not corrupted.
