Tim,

Actually you just reminded me that I have a set of 10 "white"
(read pale
blue) LED lights that I originally bought for the kitchen from B&Q.
I'll
have to dig 'em out and see how they'd look... from what I remember they
don't actually give a lot of light

I had another thought...
Check out the LED "deck lights" at B&Q. IIRC they come in a
number of
variants with different numbers of "bulbs" in the fittings so
you
could choose the light output that suits best. They're pretty
flush-fitting, just the thin lip of the fitting protrudes above
the
surface. They are not adjustable for direction, but they will
consume
far fewer amps than conventional downlighters :-)
