I'll have TiVo set up again at the new house by next week if you want to
see
one in the flesh.  They're not ugly though, if anything well suited to a
lounge as there's no buttons or slots that kits can prod and poke.

tivo will only work as a very dumb terminal without the subscription, i.e.
you will only have standard VCR style time and date recordings, no EPG, no
guide function, no season passes nothing!!

and it's a pretty chunky unit, not horrendously so but a good inch or so
higher than your average vcr
