This "problem" was recognised many years ago and there are a
number of ways
to overcome it.

Some dimmer packs maintain the last levels when the DMX input goes AWOL.
There are also standalone black boxes that are connected into the DMX line
that will also maintain a DMX stream to the dimmers when the main DMX bus
fails.
