Your best bet is to find out how an OP Amp works and a 555 timer works
Plus a basic PSU and you should be ready for most things!!!
The Art of Electronics is a good read as Keith will probably say in a
minute

Also things like
www.epemag.com
and
http://www.circuitcellar.com/
Both have subscription mags online
Good Luck

Subject: [ukha_d] Electronics Newbie
I always enjoyed electronics at school, but went down the
computing/programming
direction but want to get started at electronics, I seen a few folk on
here talking about
their own boards they have whipped up on here.
Can anyone suggest the best place to start, it doesnt need to be
"rediculiously" simple,
as I am a very technical kind of person and do have some basic
background in electricity,
physics, soldering etc..
For example how would one go about making an "active" CAT5 balun
such as
the KAT5
device? is it just a simple amplitude modulator or is there much more
trickery going on?
I quite fancy trying to apply the princible for other types of data than
audio/video.
Chris
