Excellent book, tells you a lot about practical circuit design without
getting bogged down in the hideous mathematics beloved of EE textbooks.

Also worthy of a mention "Introducing Electronic Systems" by
Michael
Brimicombe.  Primarily a GCSE textbook, it covers most of the
non-microprocessor stuff you're likely to need (555s, op-amp circuits,
digital logic, PSUs etc etc.).  It's been out of print for a while, but
I expect you could find a copy on Amazon or ebay.
