Electronics Newbie

I always enjoyed electronics at school, but went down the
computing/programming
direction but want to get started at electronics, I seen a few folk on here
talking about
their own boards they have whipped up on here.

Can anyone suggest the best place to start, it doesnt need to be
"rediculiously" simple,
as I am a very technical kind of person and do have some basic background
in electricity,
physics, soldering etc..

For example how would one go about making an "active" CAT5 balun
such as the KAT5
device? is it just a simple amplitude modulator or is there much more
trickery going on?

I quite fancy trying to apply the princible for other types of data than
audio/video.

Chris
