If that is the case, some of the sending e-mail servers were probably not
properly configured or the retry periods were too short. Otherwise, no
e-mail should be lost at all. I often see outgoing e-mails queued up on
our e-mail server with automatic lengthening retry periods until the
maximum elapse time has been reached (set to 3 days currently for us).
Only then the queued e-mails are returned to the sender.

Yes, secondary e-mail servers do have their advantages but I maintain that
unless you have control over the UCE measures on them, they are merely
spam magnets. We have our own primary and secondary e-mail servers and
thus able to synchronise the two regarding UCE measures. In fact, our
secondary is stricter (it checks more RBLs) than the primary in an effort
to reduce the volume of spam that we receive daily.
