Surely, you only need a server if there's a service you wish to provide?
This could be a file repository, a mail server, a web server, an HA
service, or whatever. Personally, I have one server which provides
mail/web/file services, and there's only me it serves. When I move (in
about 2 weeks), I'll be scaling up to two physical servers, which will
provide all the above and my HA/media services.
