You are correct in that there are 2 connectors so the drive can get enough
power to spin up.

The 2 connectors which go into the machine should be different colours
because one ONLY connects to the +5 & Gnd connections for power where
the
other has all the connections for data and the like.

If you prefer not to disconnect the cable from the USB drive itself then
connect the power only connector (red on my cable) then the main one, and
all should be fine.
