I had break beam
sensors that controlled a 12v light so that I could see when the car was
in enough to clear the door (which obviously was automated). I never had
the courage to automatically close the door as soon as the beam showed
the trick here is to craete a 'wall' of light beam by using two aprallel
mirrors and sending the beam at slightly off 90 degrees: it then croses
between the mirrors many times back and forth until it hits the receiver:
thus accomodating multiple heights.
