Hi Pedro,

For "copyright" read "income protection"

The photographer will own the copyright and as long as he retains the
negative or digital files he also owns the only way of creating top quality
prints from those images.

The moment he lets either negatives or digital images pass to another
person
he looses the exclusivity of being able to reproduce photos.

You can always scan a photo and reproduce it that way but it will be
inferior and it will be in breach of copyright but from the photographers
perspective the greatest loss is that of income.

Dont take the above as a true legal definition but that is my
interpretation
of why they wont let you have the original "masters"
