Excuse the OT post but I need a bit of advice...

In this digital era, it seems odd that I can't find a photographer for my
wedding that is willing to give me digital copies of the images, as
well as
printed images. Having spoken to various photographers, the majority of
them use digital cameras but NONE of them will give me the digital images
quoting "copyright"... Have any of you heard of this? Is this
normal?
These are Portuguese photographers in Portugal but does that explain it?

Yes, this is absolutely standard as it should be. The photographer owns
all copyright on the photos taken at your wedding unless you explicitly
agree otherwise. If that happens, you can expect to be charged several
times their normal rate assuming they don't just stare at you as if your
mad and walk out muttering to themselves.

The media makes no difference, doesn't matter whether they use film or
digital, you simply have no right to the originals. If you make copies
of photos provided by the photographer, you're also breaking the law and
most reputable photo-copy places simply won't let you.

Most wedding photographers make their money from sales of prints rather
than the wedding itself. So sorry, but either be prepared to pay through
the nose to gain originals or live with it!
