Re: A sad time for those with video media servers...
This is a *very* interesting article in this area:
http://www.technologyreview.com/articles/05/06/issue/feature_people.1.asp
It discusses how Brazil is reacting to the US drain on its economy
through IP licensing.
And if you wonder why people here get bothered by this; think about
Ian's first paragraph.
This isn't just an 'internet' issue anymore.
Do you know that schools are cutting down on musical performances and
music clubs because of the royalties they have to pay to copy sheet
music for the kids. (Yes, it's a blessing in disguise if you've ever
been forced to go along and listen to them torture some beautiful music
- but seriously!)
The content owners are messing with your children - it's most obvious in
the US but it's happening here too.
As the article says:
Lawrence Lessig is a professor of law at Stanford Law School. He is the
author of The Future of Ideas and Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace. His
most recent book, Free Culture, was released in paperback this spring
and is available as a free download at www.free-culture.org
<http://www.free-culture.org>.
So not just some nutter mouthing off.
US biased of course - but that just means it'll apply to us soon :)
