I've helped a friend who has NTL cable. His local operation [1] in
Portsmouth does use some nasty proprietary software, to register the MAC
address of the card onto their database or whatever. Once it's set up,
you then plug in a router instead and use MAC spoofing :-)

[1] NTL grew by acquisition of local cable firms. Different NTL
subsidiaries in different parts of the country inherited radically
different technologies, and the marketing of a joined-up-service far
exceeds the technical reality.
