Phil,
I had (very nearly exactly) this with the SP/DIF on the motherboard
(SoundMAX drivers) and in the end I bought a Creative Labs SoundBlaster
card
with a Digital out. This solved it for me.

Question for the MCE users out there...
I have MCE installed with PowerDVD6 as the DVD playback engine which works
fine except for the fact that I just get analogue audio out of DVDs.
