It was not supposed to be an ageist comment.

By being 60 i was indicating that he was pretty set in his ways, a little
argumentative, and seems to have problems taking instruction from someone
20+ years his junior.

The relief relating retirement was just that he is argumentative, hard to
instruct etc., and his successor is not...

I have no problem with mature employees, i employ my father still, after he
retired as he has the capacity to move with our requirements, and take
instruction.

Your contract with that employee will determine the fact if you can open
mail.

i.e. We have a clause that states the employee has no right to privacy and
may be monitored at any time.

Are you sure it is not you with the problem?

Some of the best employees I have seen are in the age related bracket that
you have an issue with.
