thanks for the tips ..

I'll look for a smoke alarm, but I don't think it's one of mine.
All phones accounted for.
Mains, but not battery, was diconnected from the alarm system - all mains
was off - even the computers :-(
I could disconnect the IR sensor - I know the engineer code - but I don't
know if I can get in to disconnect the alarm battery.

I'll get back whan I've found it
