You could use an existing pc. You can mce2005 from ebuyer as I think its
only a few quid.

Ahh - I do want digital out.  MCE (thanks for clearing that up) it is
then.

Can MCE be installed on an existing PC (provided I can find a meatier
one
than the PIII) or do I have to buy a PC with it preinstalled on?

You mean "MCE" Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

Not sure of minimum specs, but would imagine it would be better with a
decent P4.

If you want digital output then xbox is out.
