I had the same problem.

>From memory, though I don't claim to understand the technical details,
you need to do something funny to the serial ports. It doesn't just
light up when you plug it into the PC, and simply firing up a terminal
screen isn't good enough either.

Suggest you run either the xPL or the xAP meteor plugins and see if
they can make it work.
