The downside being that electricity is roughly three times as expensive as
gas.
The fuel cost of running a heat pump is about the same as conventional gas
central heating. The installation cost of course is far, far higher, and I
suspect the maintenance costs would be too, with qualified engineers thin
on
the ground.
I'd steer clear of heat-pumps for space heating until they become more
efficient.
