Discreet IR Codes

Hi
I've never worried too much about discreet codes on my kit. But now am
looking to tweak a few bits of my IR set-ups. Read a little on the forums
and have been scared a little by stories of causing factory resets and
maintenance modes by using discreet codes?
Any one got any advise?
Main two things I would like codes for are:
LG LCD
Toshiba 42" Plasma (Same as a Pany 5 series, but I don't know if they
use
the same codes?)
