Re: Cabling (Cat5 and Power) in trunking

The CAT5 standard doesn't specify whether it's screened or not.
You will typically find two types available, UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair)
and STP (Shielded Twisted Pair), the STP having a screen.
STP is a lot less flexible (in the sense of bendability, not application),
and I'd be surprised if it were needed in a domestic environment. I've only
seen it used round HIGH voltage stuff before.
As to whether 40mm is enough - rather depends on the application. If you're
talking about 100Mb/sec computer data / audio / video, it could well be.
The
tolerances for Gigabit ethernet are a lot tighter.

Subject: [ukha_d] Cabling (Cat5 and Power) in trunking
I’m thinking about running the power and a few lengths of Cat5
around my
workshop in trunking (the fat kind you get in offices where the sockets are
mounted into it). I’m running a 32A ring main and also a few runs
for other
machinery. My question relates to running Cat5 and power fairly close
together (something like 40mm separation I guess – but in parallel).
Is this
far enough apart? I guess it must be as this kind of trunking is so common
in offices – but is the Cat5 screened????
Paul.
