Also it could just be a way to harvest valid c/card details; sent from
Eastern Europe and registered in China doesn't sound entirely above board.

Be very careful on this.
You may find that the licence terms (the ones you had to accept in opening
the wrapper) include the standard OEM provision, namely that you are only
allowed to use this software ON THE HARDWARE WITH WHICH IT WAS SUPPLIED.
Hence the need to use it with either a particular motherboard, or a
particular disk, which feel like they might JUST be OK.
If you install that copy of XP on another PC, then you're breaking the
licence terms...
If this is fine by you, then so be it. However, be aware that you're NOT
actually purchasing a legal licence to the product... and on that basis,
there are cheaper ways to commit software piracy :-)
