Ian,

Just out of interest did you twist the 'extension' wires together? For me
this has solved the sort of problem you mention on many occasion - even for
non balanced 'things' like you are talking about here. An alternative could
be to put an R-C element close to the PC to 'soak' up short splats of
noise!

When twisting lengths of wire longer than a few inches I used to find that
trapping one end of the pair in a vice and the other in the jaws of a hand
drill chuck worked well. Alternatively a pair from a piece of UTP will
remove the need for manual twisting!
