Ken,

I've been using EAC (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/)
with the LAME
encoder (http://lame.sourceforge.net/ &
Windows download from
http://www.jthz.com/%7Elame/
amongst others), as recommended by Mark H.
EAC uses www.freedb.org for album & track info lookup. Apart from a few
glitches recently in the album lookup (I think it's as I get to the
dodgier parts of my collection ;-)  ) the ripping / encoding side has
been really good.
