Re: New Regs to kill DIY HA?
Compliance with Part P requires alterations and additions to domestic
installations to be in compliance with BS7671 (16th edition regs), it does
not define types of rooms.
BS7671 has a section on special installations or locations such as Bath
& shower rooms, saunas, swimming pools, construction sites and
agricultural buildings.
Kitchens are not singled out for special treatment. By following the regs
all rooms should be covered.
Part P is more to do with inspection & testing ensuring the
installation complies with the regs and the issue of certificates to show
it is. Please note it is like an MOT, only at the time of inspection is the
system as certified, as the make and type of main circuit component is on
the certificate the change from a Hagar MCB to a Merlin Gerin MCB will
invalidate the certificate. I'm sure this is heading towards the time when
a house is sold and a complete 'picture' of the house is handed over, and
if it is not I'm absolutely sure your mortgage lender will find a one off
insurance payment that can cover it!
Apart from the NICEIC, BSI, ELECSA, the ECA & UKTC offer schemes for
self certification.
I would like to ask if anyone out there has had their X-10 installation
inspected and tested and if any damage has occoured to X-10 equipment?

Does anyone know what a "kitchen" is as far as Part P is
concerned? I have a room that we tend to live in and one end has a sink and
a cooker, plus there are plumbed in dishwasher, and washing machine.
However the room is quite large - nine metres end to end - so does the
other end count as a kitchen area. What about fully open plan situations?
