I use a Nikon Coolscan IV ED with superb results.

It cost £300 on eBay and was worth every penny.

Like others,  it's not up to professional standards for repro use but it's
more than adequate for archiving purposes

The only gripe is that it's a bit slow (about 30 - 60 secs per slide maybe
more) and an auto slide loader is extra. However,  it does have the superb
ICE technology for removing dust and scratches. This works by scanning with
visible and infrared and then using some clever wizardry to work out what's
a scratch and what is actually a part of the image.
