Sounds like a magnetic field...
Anything with a motor or transformer in it nearby? Fans or aircon,
maybe low-voltage lighting?
If you've got a some kind of amplifier (tape recorder or similar) and a
telephone pickup coil or dynamic (not condenser) microphone (a small
loudspeaker might work too - basically something with a coil in it), you
might be able to pick up the interference as an audible hum. By moving
the mic around you'll be able to locate the source of the interference.
The pitch of the sound might give further clues if it's not standard
50Hz mains hum...
