RE: Alternative for lounge / kitchen PCs?
Hi David
I use a Cybex KVM extender (Ebay for =A3100) which doesn=92t do exactly
wha=
t you
want in that it does not allow PC sharing. But running a keyboard, mouse
an=
d
monitor at distances over CAT5 works a treat, 1024x768 res with no
noticeable loss on my 17" TFT.
It allows me to keep my main file server well out of the way for total
silence :-)

Most of the recurring problems with domestic PCs, particularly in=20
kitches and lounges is WAF. Its all about noise and size.

This thing allows you to add extra screen/keyboard/moose to an=20
existing PC using cat5 cable. So, with a PC in node zero, you could=20
have extra silent, small user stations remotely.
Better than this, for MP3 player applications, the sound card is=20
still in the node zero machine, so wiring to the central amps is=20
simplified.
Has anyone tried anything like this? Much as I'ver searched, I cant=20
find anyone who publicly admits to using one of these things, only=20
retailer speil and the odd review from the last century, when they=20
worked with Windows 95.
provantage (USA, no affiliation other than the satisfied customer=20
malarky, and they ship internationally) list the thing for $184.16,=20
which is rather less than the $239 list price. And is rather less=20
than the cost of trying to make a quiet PC :-)
provantage URL, which will probably get screwed, is=20
