Alarm I/O --> Serial Port

Hi,

I'm helping with a project which needs to access several, up to 12,
switched
binary type inputs. The board we are using, which is the canine cajones in
every other respect, doesn't really support this but does have a spare
serial port. Ideally I'd like to be able to knock something up that muxes
all the inputs into a parseable serial output. Does anyone know if such a
thing exists? Or if not how difficult would it be to knock up? As an added
bonus, conversion of serial output to switched output would be even better
as well.

Cheers,

Phil,
