Thanks for all of the advice & help re. my dead-ish hard drive. It
turned out to be a corrupt MBR that was the problem and with that fixed the
drive now seems to be fine.
Being without the machine for several days (certainly long enough to
accumulate over 800 emails in my inbox) felt like I'd had parts of my
anatomy surgically removed :-)
You can be sure that my back up & disaster recovery routine will now be
put into full practice rather than simply dismissing it curtly because
"it's never happened to me yet mate!".
