We have the same problem with our network providers (Damovo). They have
disabled all ICMP traffic (which ping is a part of) to try and cope with
the latest virus doing the rounds. They say they will turn it back on
once the virus is under control which may also be the case for BT.

Afternoon all,

I thought that you may be interested in this,

My wife works for a large Bank who have a lot of homeworkers. She has
just told me that suddenly staff were unable to connect to the office
via their work provided home ADSL lines. It turns out that BT had
blocked 'pinging' on all of it's adsl connections without bothering to
mention it to anyone. They claimed that it was to prevent viruses.

Don't know if this is an isolated case or if it's country wide
