I'm about to start wiring up a new extension, and want to put wiring
in for PIR's and reed switches to cover openings and movement in
rooms. I was thinking of using Cat5e into the corners of rooms, and
into the window/door frames for the PIR and reed switches, but I
notices that Cat5e is a thinner wire grade than the normal 4 wire
alarm cable.

Will this work over cat5e, or should I just go for 4 wire alarm
cable to these locations? The additional wires in cat5e might prove
useful in the future, especially in the PIR locations.

Cheers
Dave
