Could it be the Palm that's the problem here?

IME performance of WLAN stuff is primarly down to effective aerial
design (there only about 3 chipsets in common use afterall). That's
one reason why the Lucent/Agilent PC cards are *so* much better than,
say, the Compaq WLx00 equivalents, and also explains why CF cards
perform worse than PC cards.
