Not sure if this has been suggested before, but you could try the
following:

Go into Control Panel -> Network.
In the Primary Network Logon drop-down box, it is probably set to
"Client for Microsoft Networks".
Change it to "Windows Logon" and restart.

(It's a while since I used W98, so I'm hoping my memory is correct!)
