Hi Dan,

Thanks for the reply.

The phones on eBay are Cisco CP-30VIP (try the url http://tinyurl.com/ak51),
but as I understand it this model has to be used with Cisco's own call
manager software. I've been trying to see if it's possible to flash them
with a different firmware to make them SIP compatible, but so far no
success. They're very cheap though, £40 each brand new boxed.

I've just visited FWD and signed up, so now all I need is to decide on and
find some inexpensive phones. What phones are you using? I'll probably be
going for some USB models for rooms that have PC's in them, but I'd want
stand alone units for all the other rooms.

Thanks,

Martyn

Hi Martyn,

I cannot see the page from your link.
What IP phone is about?
Cisco has some SIP phones too (7940 / 7960 or ATA-186/188), so you are not
more stuck with proprietary protocols.

It is a good choice to have VoIP phones in each room (hardware/ software or
combined: see Actiontec's USB Internet Phone Wizard)...
Then open a FWD account for each one and you can call each other for free
and even your overseas friends. (see http://fwd.pulver.com for details)
You can use a PC2Phone provider ( many available on the net) and then call
regular phones too.

Mainly two protocols are used now for residential users: SIP and H.323, so
the majority of the available hardware IP phones use one or both of those
protocols.
FWD uses SIP

I have something like this for each family member and it is great...

If you need further assistance drop me a mail.

Best regards,
Dan
