MP3 Encoding - Help required!

Hi guys

I'm a newbie to MP3 - and would like to start preparations for
archiving my CD collection to my PC in anticipation of having whole
house audio via devices like the SLIMP3.

I've downloaded the Musicmatch Plus software and am ready to start
ripping my CDs.

I would like some opinion on what settings I should use for the MP3
encoding process. What bitrate? VBR? MP3pro? etc....  (I only want to
do the archiving process once!)

Storage is a cheap medium these days so I am keen to maximise the
quality over storage ratio...
