Tom,

Step 1, I'm afraid, is to get rid of MusicMatch as your ripper
software. There's been a lot of testing done (www.r3mix.net), and MM
has some problems. Exact Audio Copy (www.exactaudiocopy.de)

EAC is the ripper, but works best with an external MP3 encoder.
Again, the quality-focussed end of the MP3 community seems to regard
LAME (lame.sourceforge.net) as the best.

The recommended settings is simply --r3mix.

--r3mix is an alias for "--nspsytune --vbr-mtrh -V1 -mj -h -b96 --
lowpass 19.5 --athtype 3 --ns-sfb21 2 -Z --scale 0.98 -X0"

The fact that it's now built into LAME as an alias should give an
indication that it's regarded highly as a set of settings.
