This was a case of rtfm!!

Hidden away in the middle of a paragraph about some little used features of
the amp was a statement to the effect that the output method must be the
same
as the input method, ie if it comes in via s-vid out it goes via s-vid. I
was
using composite as the svid connector is on the front of the TV :-(
