The other option might be to got with Comfort and HomeBrain (soon to be
released I believe).

All depends what else you want to control.  Homevision is probably the best
for X10 control and super reliable.  personally I have Comfort and
Homevision link directly to each other.  I keep the comfort set up simply
for the alarm and let HV handle all the lighting, irrigation, SMS
messaging, event logging etc.  Personally I think the advice would be to
think of the alarm first then work out what you need for the automation as
a second.
