Ah-ha. That's the puppy.

This works for the TV. I tried something like this to get my Akai VCR to
record a few years ago (it also needs a held press) when my Pronto was
new, and before I had TiVo; but I could never get that to work.

The TV is now turning on and off at least (Panasonic TV have no discrete
codes for AV selection, so now I have to think my way around that one, I
was spoilt with the Sony!).
