I use a Falcom A2D GSM modem with a Virgin EQ SIM (pay as you go, but
billed monthly by direct debit).

SMS gateways depend on your mobile provider. Orange have a free
service for example which works quite well; people speak well of
Lycos. I expect Google will turn up plenty of others... You might
also want to consider using an analogue modem to send text messages:
Vodafone have a dialup service which is simple to script. O2 have a
TAP compliant gateway which can also be accessed using an analogue
modem. These are well supported by Matthew Haigh's SMS master
software.

This came up a while back. I can't remember who it was who picked up
the thread, but as I recall it is only currently being trialled with
O2? I don't think there is enough information available yet to hack
it for modem use?
