Re: Access Control

Philip

We did exactly this at somewhere I worked 8/9 years ago. "Normal"
solutions
were too expensive so we did it our own way. Integrateed Access, Security,
Time keeping etc etc onto a single Bar Code system Our own software keyed
into our own personnell databse and you had complete control as you say.

But... of course I dont have the product details we used.

Essentially we dedicated a PC with a few serial ports. It was Swipe card
based ("Normal" 3 of 9 barcode behind an IR-only window laminate
style card)
system using RS232 attached bar code readers. A single program sat on the
PC, taking details from the readers, recording time etc then using an
exisiting interface to the Factory PLC (HomeVision on steroids ;) ) to
control door locks, gate locks. I seem to remember we had about 4 card
readers all told. including one on the Main Gate, factory doors and the
Time
Keeping unit itself. The software was in MS QuickBasic (not QBasic) and was
actually fairly trivial. All the software was in Basic and ran a complete
custom time/attendance/payroll backend.

I seem to remember people advertise RS232 style bar code readers in the
back
of some of the more business orientated PC mags. "Worthington"
rings a bell
but I cnat verify that just at the moment
