Do we not need a security certificate from a provider such as verisign?
The documentation on their website seems to indicate that a certificate
is the only way to ensure browser security.

Or am I just barking up the wrong lamppost?

Forgot to say run the microsoft lockdown tools and security analyser -
that
will help along with windows update.  By far you need to keep ontop of
critial updates with windows boxes on a day to day basis.
